Final Decision On Munro Today

Robert B. Watson, Director of Athletics, will announce today whether Bruce Munro will be retained as varsity soccer coach.

The six returning juniors of the soccer team will meet with Watson and the Faculty Committee on Athletic Sports. The final decision is Watson's, but the Faculty will offer recommendations.

Charlie Thomas, captain-elect and spokesman for the six-man delegation. will present at least "18 points of failure noted during the year." "The juniors are now organized to present themselves as a formal investigation rather than trouble-makers," Thomas said.

Thomas has been assured by Watson that a final decision concerning Munro's status will be reached at the close of the meeting.

Munro also has been invited to appear before the committee today, but he has been asked to arrive after the players have finished their presentation. Munro refused comment Monday on the issues, stating "there have been so many misconceptions made public that I would rather wait until after a decision is reached."

The questions which the Faculty Committee must resolve are:

Has Munro been picked as a scapegoat for a frustrated NCAA defeat, or was a successful season made miserable by misguided coaching?

Were the disputes on the team during the past season a problem caused by the inherent personality clashes of players, or did Munro agitate internal dissension between teammates?

Is Munro's 23-year record as coach a sign of his success, or have his soccer skills become outmoded for collegiate players?

Is this year's crisis a personal fend magnified out of proportion or the surfacing of a long-existent and deep-seated tension?

In March, Watson temporarily decided to retain Munro as coach, but Thomas has the verbal backing of all but one member of last year's varsity squad.
