Tigers, Elis Fall to Superboat

By Richard K. Sontgerath

There is only one person who has yet to concede that Harvard's lightweight crew is indeed a "superboat" and that person is their coach. Steve Gladstone, Considering the fact that his oarsmen must next week face a competitive field in the Eastern Sprints. Gladstone's reservations are understandable but certainly not warranted.

Last Saturday, for the fourth consecutive week, the Crimson had placed a handful of boat lengths between itself and the opposition by the finish. Princeton and Yale were the victims this time, trailing by five and eight boats respectively, as Harvard rowed home in 6:18.3.

Princeton had been expected to press Harvard, using their quick start for an early advantage. To counter this, Gladstone had his crew working on starts all week and the Tigers were trailing after the first few strokes.

The Crimson gained its early lead while pulling at 46 for the first 25 strokes before settling to 34 for the body.

Harvard also registered its fourth straight in the J.V. division as their time of 6:34 was second only to the Crimson varsity's in all of Saturday's racing. Princeton's J.V. is finished three boats behind Harvard while Yale was third, 14 seconds behind the winner.

Bo Anderson's freshman lights completed Harvard's lightweight sweep by notching their fourth consecutive win. The Yardlings outdistanced Princeton by seven seconds and Yale by 29 to gain their fourth in a row this spring.

Saturday's victories left Harvard's lightweight crews with a combined won-loss record of 12-0.
