After breaking an eight-game losing streak by deadlocking Wellesley last Thursday, the Radcliffe field hockey team returned to its losing ways Saturday, falling by a 6-0 margin to Princeton.
The Tigers scored three goals in each half, as they applied offensive pressure throughout the contest. Princeton managed 29 shots on Radcliffe goaltender Barb Matson, while Radcliffe took just four on the Tiger net.
Despite the score, Radcliffe did not play all that badly. "We played very well, especially the defense," Matson said yesterday. "Our main problem was the same one that we've encountered all season. We can hold the other team, but we can't get off any shots of our own."
Radcliffe, in fact, showed marked improvement over its performance in last year's Princeton game, which the Tigers won by a score of 9-1. The Crimson, however, lost seven players this fall from last year's squad, while Princeton graduated just two.
Saturday's contest was simply a case of Princeton's offense being too aggressive for the inexperienced Radcliffe defenders. The Radcliffe offense, on the other hand, was virtually nonexistent, as the Tigers completely controlled the play.
Radcliffe now has two games remaining on its schedule. On Thursday, the stick- women host Pine Manor, a game which they are looking forward to as they feel they have a chance to gain their first victory.
Their final contest will be against Yale a week from Saturday. The Elis are currently undefeated, a fact which should provide Radcliffe with plenty of incentive as they seek to end their season with a major upset.
