Cliffe Swimmers Grab Eighth In N.E. Intercollegiate Contest

A previously undefeated Radcliffe swim team came away with an eighth place finish last weekend at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championships in Orono, Maine.

Junior Nancy Sato highlighted the twenty-five team meet with first place finishes in one-meter and three-meter diving competitions. This performance netted her the New England Intercollegiate Diving Champion title for 1974.

Team captain RoAnn Costin also put in an excellent showing Saturday, netting 49 points with her second-place finish in the 400-free, third in the 200-free, and fourth in the 100-freestyle events.

Julie Bradley and sophomore Kyle Patterson also placed high in the competition with Bradley coming in 11th in both 100-backstroke and 200-freestyle events, and Patterson placing 15th in the 50-meter backstroke.

"Our individual performances were probably the best of the season," Costin said yesterday. "The work and time we put in showed up with fabulous cuts and drops in the times."

Coach Alice G. McCabe called the team's finale an "excellent showing" in light of insufficient practice and reduced team size. "One of the difficult things for us was that we didn't get enough time in the water after Christmas. We had trouble with practice schedules and had a broken pump in the Radcliffe pool," McCabe said.

The team was also missing senior powerhouse Connie Cervilla who could not attend the meet because of previous commitments. Radcliffe was unable to enter the 40-point medley relay because of Cervilla's absence.

The team ended its season with a 5-0 dual-meet record.
