HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
A 16-MEMBER committee chaired by Karl Strauch, professor of Physics, is meeting this fall to finalize its recommendations to Presidents Bok and Horner on the future of Harvard and Radcliffe admissions policies.
Although the Committee is making recommendations about something that will affect undergraduates at Harvard and Radcliffe more than anyone else, the student input into the committee has thus far been small. There are four undergraduate members of the Strauch Committee, but they are outnumbered by the 12 alumni-faculty-administrative members.
Already straw votes indicate that most of the non-student members are willing to consider enlarging the undergraduate student body by at least 10 per cent to accomodate more women. This would almost surely necessitate another large scale construction project for additional dormitory space, and further overcrowd classrooms.
It is important that undergraduate sentiment be strongly registered with the Strauch Committee. Petitions from house committees and other undergraduate organizations and letters from individuals could serve notice to the Committee that some of the proposals they are exploring are unsatisfactory to students.
