Williams Field Hockey Garners Decisive Win Stretches Radcliffe's Losing Streak to Five

By Ann M. Koufman

Radcliffe's field hockey team anticipated a win against Williams at home this weekend but their opponents proved themselves to be much stronger than the Cliffe ever expected, taking a 3-1 victory and adding to the Cliffe's five game losing streak.

Despite a frustrating attempt to change its ways, the Cliffe was unable to get control of the ball until the second half when it was already 2-0.

Williams only outshot the Cliffe by a 12-9 margin, but they outran, out-passed, and generally just outdid the Cliffe stickhandlers until the second half when Maude Wood, Radcliffe's right link, chiseled through the Williams defense to score a one and lonely goal.

With greater momentum the Cliffe took possession of the ball to put the pressure on throughout the second half. "The team worked well together and we had several chances to score but we just couldn't put it in again," coach Debi Field said last night.

The J.V. game brought more of the same. Williams again overpowered the Cliffe, having possession of the ball the entire game to tally an easy 5-0 victory.

Most mistakes occured at the defensive line. Field said "the goalies, Nina Strand and Ellen Seidler, both played extremely well, but Williams' J.V. made some very sophisticated moves that outmaneuvered our defense and ultimately cost us several goals."

Frustrated with losing but still willing to fight it out, the Cliffe will take on Brown this Saturday in Providence.
