'Cliffe Gymnasts Lose to Mt. Holyoke

The Radcliffe Gymnastics squad ended a short and unsuccessful season Saturday with a 60-33 loss to Mt. Holyoke at Holyoke.

Junior Holly Holcomb, third on the balance beam, and captain Jean Speidel, second in free exercise, captured the only Radcliffe places in this, the 'Cliffe's only meet of the season.

"We had a lot of little problems in the meet," junior gymnast Martha Malkin said yesterday. "We didn't know which tricks were scored as medium or superior. On the bars none of us got over one point, while all of the Holyoke girls got threes and fours."

"We've also had trouble practicing on the beam [at Hemenway] because it rattles and we can't adjust it to practice the difficult moves at a lower height," Malkia added.

Underestimate

Coach Ron Katen said the team had expected to lose by 16 points. "Instead we lost by almost 25," he said.

The six women team computers in floor exercise balance beam, vaulting and the uneven parallel bars.

The squad is categorized as a "club sport" in the Harvard program.
