Radcliffe Cagers Succumb to Williams, 48-45; Second-Half Comeback Attempt Falls Short

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A frantic comeback attempt by the Radcliffe cagers fell short Saturday at Williams as the undefeated Eph-women hung on to eke out a 48-45 victory.

Down by as many as 13 points in the second half, the Radcliffe squad fought back to within two points with less than a minute to go, only to lose possesion of the ball on a contested call.

With less than a minute to go, Williams had the ball and a 47-45 lead. Radcliffe's Denise Thal committed an intentional foul in the hope of getting the ball, but the referee saw it as a technical foul, allowing Williams to add a free throw, keep possesion and ice the game.

Good D

Radcliffe played a fine defensive game, but its inability to hit from inside, especially in the first half, proved to be its demise. The cagers were simply unable to get untracked, and as a result trailed by nine, 33-24, at the end of the first half.

Cheryl Gelzer came off the bench in the second half to spark the Radcliffe offense with some key rebounds, and the gap began to narrow. Susie Williams (13 points) and Kathy Fullton (12 points) got hot in the second half and started to hit from both inside and outside.

Traded Hoops

With about five minutes left. Williams led by five points, and the two teams traded baskets. About a minute remained. Then Radcliffe cut the lead to 47-45 by virtue of a technical foul on Williams for using an unlisted player, only to lose the ball at the end.

Captain Jeannie Guyton said after the game that "if the game had been a minute longer we would have pulled it out."

After the game, the team elected junior Maude Wood and sophomore Susie Williams as next year's co-captains. Both have been consistent performers on the team for two years.
