Embree to Represent Harvard In High Jump at Penn Relays

By Mercedes A. Laing

Junior high-jumper Mel Embree is Harvard's sole entry in today's prestigious Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field.

Embree will compete in the seeded section, coach Edgar Stowell said. Where he will face a field of 12 top collegiate high jumpers. Including a number who have previously cleared seven feet. Embree's best mark is 7 ft., 2 1/4 in.

Stowell said Embree's knee injury, that forced him to take a long lay-off, will hopefully not affect his chances.

"He has an excellent chance of doing very well." Stowell said. "He's ready to go and has competed successfully in the last three meets we've had."

Fifth Place

Last year. Embree placed fifth at the Penn meet, with a jump of 6 ft., 10 in.

Stowell said the other Harvard trackmen stayed home to prepare for Tuesday's Dartmouth meet and to "nurse a number of minor injuries."
