Harvard Baseball Squad Splits Pair In Hanover; Linehan Flips One-Hitter

By William E. Stedman jr.

Harvard and Dartmouth put on quite a pitching display last Saturday in Hanover. N.H. as the Crimson and the Green split an Eastern League double header.

Dartmouth ace Jim Beattie and Harvard's Milt Holt locked horns in the opener, each limiting the opposition to five hits. But the Big Green took advantage of those hits to defeat the hard-luck Holt. 2-0 In the nightcap, however Mark Linehan showed them both up as he tossed a one-hitter to dump Dartmouth, 5-0.

"I think we played the best two games back-to-back of the season." Crimson coach Loyal Park commented yesterday, despite the loss. "I was really very pleased with the way we played."

Hot Pitcher

In the first game. Harvard came up against one of the hottest pitchers in the east this season in Beattie. Beattie, who beat Penn earlier in the season, dueled Holt pitch for pitch until the fifth inning, when his teammates staked him to a two run lead that he held the rest of the way.

"He's certainly one of the top five pitchers in the East." Park said, "But we had our chances to beat him. We'd have men on first and second in the first and third innings and miss the bunt. You know, things like that kept happening."

Holt, meanwhile, suffered another tough loss, as the Harvard bats once again could not come up with the timely hits. "He's pitched three good games." Park said of his ace. "I think he's pitching as well as he did last year." Unfortunately, Hold is not getting the runs he needs for a decent won-loss record.

But the Crimson came back with a vengeance in the second game behind Linehan's strong performance. Harvard bats pounded out seven hits to back Linehan, doing all the damage in the fifth inning.

Leon Goetz provided most of the offence with a three-run triple in the fifth, as Harvard chased four pitchers off the mound. Dartmouth starter Dave DeMarco was saddled with the loss.

Park's brigade takes its road show to Waltham this Wednesday for a Greater Boston League tilt with Branders in an effort to up its 11-8 northern record (Harvard is 23-8 overall including a 12-0 spring trip)
