Brown President

By Joseph Dalton

The naming of the new president of Brown University is "anywhere from two weeks to two months away," Vernon K. Alden, a Boston business executive and president of the search committee, said yesterday.

The committee is seeking a replacement for Dr. Donald F. Horning '40. whose resignation becomes effective June 30. Alden said yesterday that the original list of over 300 applicants has been narrowed down to "ten or twelve." He said that three of these were especially impressive, and will be interviewed at least twice more on the Brown campus."

Alden said that while some Harvard professors and administrators were included on the original list, no one now connected with Harvard was being considered for the Brown job. He declined to name the Harvard educators originally considered.

The selection committee consists of five Brown trustees, the president of the Brown alumni association, three professors' and three students.
