Frankfurter Display Opens

By Payne L. Templeton

Colleagues and former students of the late Felix Frankfurter gathered yesterday at Langdell Library to pay tribute to the former Supreme Court Justice and to celebrate the library's exhibition of Frankfurter memorabilia.

Albert M. Sacks, dean of the Law School, Paul A. Freund, Loeb University Professor emeritus, and Louis Henken, professor of Law at Columbia recounted their experiences as Frankfurter's law clerks.

Frankfurter "was above all a teacher." Freund said, adding that Frankfurter remained concerned with teaching even after he finished his 25-year stint as a Harvard Law professor to go to the Supreme court.

Freund, a student of Frankfurter's, praised the care with which Frankfurter read students' essays. He added that the present "anonymous" grading system hinders this kind of exchange between professors and students.
