This year's Norton Lecturer gave the fourth in a series of six lectures on "The Senses of the Narrative" yesterday to an audience of 150 people at the Science Center.

Frank Kermode, King Edward VII Professor of English Literature, discussed the relationship between plot and character, dealing primarily with the role of Judas in the passion of the New Testament.

He said he was trying to show how the character of Judas developed through successive presentations of the Passion in the Bible and how the development of the character required the authors to add unsubstantiated details to complete the narrative.

The next Norton Lecture will be given in Science Center B on Tuesday, February 21 at 4 p.m. Kermode is the author of "The Romantic Image," "Puzzles and Epiphanies," and "The Sense of an Ending."
