UFW Supporters Urge New Boycott In Rally at Square

By Marc J. Jenkins

Supporters of the United Farm Workers (UFW) carried placards through Harvard Square yesterday calling for a boycott of Red Coach Lettuce.

The group, which included at least ten Harvard students, held signs saying "Boycott Red Coach Lettuce" in front of the Coop for two hours.

"We are trying to inform the public and make them aware of the boycott," Carmen Delgado. Cambridge coordinator for the UFW, said yesterday. She added. "We are also trying to raise money for the families on strike."

Striking UFW workers have lived on union funds since they walked out, but the UFW treasury is nearly depleted. Delgado said.

"The situation has gotten to be violent, deadly. We want to let people know about what's going on." Delgado said.

Delgado has led other demonstrations supporting the boycott at Tufts University, Boston College, and Boston University.

The group has also collected 800 signatures on a petition asking for support for the boycott.
