Racquetwomen Back on Track

Shut Out Smith, Vassar

The Harvard women's squash team devastated Smith and Vassar Saturday, drubbing both schools by 7-0 scores in Northampton, Mass.

The double victory put the racquetwomen back on the winning track after last week's disappointing losses to Princeton and Yale. The squad's head-to-head record now stands at 9-2.

The Crimson served up an overwhelming weekend, with only captain Jenny Stone dropping a single game and no one else allowing more than ten points in any one game.

Wendy Sonnabend, playing in the number five position, recorded an incredibly rare 15-0 rout, while sixth-slotted Stone and fifth-ranked freshman Courtney Stimpson both registered 15-1 triumphs.

"We knew beforehand that the two teams wouldn't be so strong, but it's nice for our record," coach Paul Moses said yesterday. "The match was also good practice for the nationals," he added.

The racquetwomen's two remaining head-to-head contests, with Wellesley today and Middlebury Saturday, should not be much more difficult, Moses said the nationals will take place on the first weekend in March. Only the top four players will travel to Middletown, Conn., for the national championships. To determine which of the racquetwomen will make the trip, Moses will hold several challenge matches over the next two weeks.

CRIMSON NICKS: Top-ranked Becky Tung, number two Cynthia Stanton, third-slotted Nell Foreman, Stimpson, Sonnabend and number seven Eleanor Cunningham all disposed of their adversaries Saturday without dropping a game.
