COLLEGE PARK, Md.--University of Maryland officials are reporting a rise in incidents of anti-semitism on campus, including vandalism of the Hillel house and graffiti painted in university buildings.
In the last seven months the Hillel house has had its windows broken on several occasions, an air conditioner stolen, a swing set vandalized and the fence surrounding the house torn down.
Red swastikas also were spray painted on the ceilings of three elevators in Hagerstown hall last month, with the words "Death to Jews" painted next to them.
Yolande Ford, the university's human relations office director, said there was a "seriously heightened" atmosphere of tension on campus among racial, cultural and religious groups.
