Assembly Attendance Debated

In an attempt to boost sagging attendance, the Student Assembly unofficially voted last night in favor of moving the starting date of its one-year membership terms from February to September.

Former assembly chairman Joseph F. McDonough '81 said yesterday attendance at assembly meetings last semester became a critical problem for the assembly, preventing--as it did last night--official votes on any matter due to a lack of quorum

"Many assembly members lose interest in the Assembly over the summer," one assembly member said. "They lose enthusiasm and, because it is a new school year, they are ready to begin new things," he added.

Assembly members could not agree on whether those members who have missed four or more meetings should be dismissed immediately from the Assembly or whether dismissal should occur at the end of the term. A proposed amendment would allow those removed from office to run for re-election.

Polls

New elections for the Assembly under the old system will be held February 17-19 in all undergraduate dining halls. The new Assembly will hold its first meeting February 22
