Clowes and Family Contribute Funds To Professorship

By Eva J. Yablonsky

A Harvard Medical School professor and his family have provided funds for a new professorship in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the University announced last week.

George H. A. Clowes, clinical professor of Surgery said the new chair his family endowed with approximately $1 million is designed to link the sciences to the humanities and social sciences.

"Too many scientists don't relate their work clearly to society as a whole," he said. Similarly, he added, many non-scientists, like politicians, don't know enough about science to make many important decisions.

Henry Ehrenreich, McKay Professor of Applied Physics was named the first Clowes Professor of Science. He currently teaches the core course. "Modern Physics Concepts and Development," and is a private technical consultant to several government agencies and companies.

Ehrenreich is a recognized scientist who at the same time relates his knowledge to other fields." Clowes said, calling him a superb" choice.
