More than 3000 students from the State Universities of New York (SUNY) gathered in Albany two weeks ago to protest the cuts made in the university system by New York Gov. Mario Cuomo.

The rally followed a day during which the students lobbied individual representatives in the Legislative Office Building in the Empire State Plaza, the administrative core of the New York State government.

Sponsored by the Student Association of the State University, the activities were supported by the United University Professions and many legislators.

In just one year Cuomo plans more cuts in faculty and staff than in eight years of the Carey administration, said Student Association President Jim Tierney. "This is outrageous, ridiculous, unintelligent and wasteful."

Cuomo's proposed budget for 1983-84 calls for a $250 tuition hike and a $150 increase in room rent which many students say will make a SUNY diploma prohibitively expensive. --The Oswegonian
