Watson Places Third--Again At U.S. Indoor Diving Meet

Sophomore All-American Dan Watson bounced to a third-place finish in the three-meter springboard event at the U.S. Indoor Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., falling to the two divers who represented the United States in the World Championships this summer.

Watson, who netted 621.48 points in 11 dives, followed reigning world three-meter champ Greg Louganis (677.73) and Ron Merriot (654.45). The score earned the South House resident a spot on the U.S. National team.

"I've seen him be sharper," said Harvard Diving Coach John Walker. "But he was consistent--very, very steady."

On Wednesday, Watson also placed third in the one-meter competition.

Watson takes to the the 10-meter platform today to defend his U.S. indoor title in the preliminaries of that event. Louganis, who captured the world title this summer, will again be the diver to beat.

Two weeks ago, Watson placed third on the low board and fourth on the high board in the NCAA Championships, also hold in Indianapolis. In his two years at Harvard, the Ashland, Ky., native is undefeated in dual meet competition and won both boards at the 1982 and 1983 Eastern Seaboard Championships.
