Don't Compromise Hiring Decisions

DISSENTING OPINION

By David S. Hilzenrath

The University should support and publicize events of all official student organizations during freshman week to introduce each incoming class to the full range of extra-curricular college life. It should also encourage all students to join in non-separatist cultural and ethnic experiences. Fundamentally, the Freshman Dean's Office should enhance bonds among students--not accentuate divisions. The FDO's revised calendar, a laudable step in the right direction, furthers these basic goals.

In appointing faculty, the University should strive to bring the best scholars and teachers to the academic community. The pursuit of excellence demands that Harvard vigorously seek out such individuals from all corners. Insofar as the current sparsity of minority representation reflects discrimination or inadequate efforts to recruit minority candidates, the majority opinion is justified in its criticism. However, the University should not compromise hiring decisions on the basis of criteria other than qualification.
