Laxmen Embarrass Springfield, 19-7

Impressive Win Raises Record to 2-3

Just a day after it was written off as a winless, untalented team, the Harvard men's lacrosse team yesterday responded with its most convincing win in four years.

The laxwmen pounded Springfield, 19-7, before 100 fans on Ohiri Field. The 19 Harvard goals were the most the team had scored since 1980, when the Crimson toppled the University of Connecticut, 20-10.

The impressive win, which saw Harvard jump to an 8-0 lead after one quarter, raised the squad's record to 2-3. The Crimson incorrectly reported on Monday that the laxmen had opened the season with three consecutive losses. But the squad's 10-7 win over Boston College during spring break was the Cantabs first win of the year.

And it didn't take too long yesterday for Harvard to secure win number two.

In fact, sophomore Tom Corcoran needed just 29 seconds to get things rolling. Corcoran controlled the opening face off, zeroad in on Springfield goals Jeff Sherman, dished the ball> received it back and with a quick flick of the wrist made it 1-0.

Blitz

Maltin Clark made it 2-0 just 58 seconds into the contest and Corcoran followed up his first with a second just 1:10 into the showdown.

With three goals in the first 70 seconds, Harvard dictated the game's entire tempo, keeping Springfield on the defensive. An 11-2 Harvard halftime lead became a 17-3 Harvard advantage after three quarters. Four goals from the visitors in the final stanza made it closer than it actually was.

The Crimson now moves on to highly ranked Syracuse Saturday in New York. THE NOTEBOOK: Rob Hawley led all Harvard scores with four goals. Peter Follows had three goals, as did Paul Garavente Corcoran and Chris Pujolz, Martin Garcia, Jamie Wright, Clark and Steve Voelkel all had one... The Crimson, which scored in double figures only once last year, has now reached double digits twice this year.
