Steiner Will Take Sabbatical Next Fall

University Vice-President and General Counsel Daniel Steiner '54 said yesterday he will take a three and one half month leave of absence from his post to travel abroad at the beginning of the next academic year.

"President Bok has been offering me a mini-sabbatical for years and I finally decided to take it." Steiner said.

To Tour Europe and the Middle East.

Steiner said he will use the time purely as a vacation, adding that he plans to travel through Europe and the Middle East.

Steiner is generally regarded as one of President Bok's closest advisers and one of the most powerful men in Harvard's central administration. He oversees the University Police force, the general counsel's office (Harvard's legal department), the personnel office and Harvard Real Estate--which manages the University's extensive property holdings.

He said his duties would be divided among the heads of each individual department while he is away.

Steiner has been a Harvard since 1969. As general council, Steiner gradually assumed more responsibilities in the administration and last year President Bok promoted him to the vice president's post
