ALABAMA

Democrat Richard Shelby narrowly defeated incumbent Jeremiah Denton. Guy Hunt, however, became the state's first Republican governor since Reconstruction.

ALASKA

In Alaska's Senatorial election Republican incumbent Frank E. Murkowski faced a challenge from Democrat Glenn Olds. In the Governor's race. Arliss Sturgulewski, is squaring off against Republican Steve Cowper.

ARIZONA

In the race to the fill the seat of retiring five-term Senator Barry Goldwater. Republican John McCain was the winner. In a tight three-way race, Republican Evan Meacham won the governship.

ARKANSAS

Incumbent Democratic Senator Dale Bumpers advanced his chances in the Vice-Presidential and Presidential sweepstakes with a convincing victory. Incumbent Democratic Governor Bill Clinton also won re-election.

CALIFORNIA

Democratic Senator Alan Cranston held off a tough challenge from Republican Ed Zschau. In the race for the state house, first-term incumbent George Deukmejian easily beat the 68-year-old Black mayor of Los Angeles, Tom Bradley.

COLORADO

Colorado Democratic Rep. Tim Wirth '61 defeated Ken Kramer to retain the Democrats' seat. For governor, Democrat Roy Romer topped Republican Ted Strickland.

CONNECTICUT

Incumbent Democrat Christopher Dodd won re-election with more than 60 percent of the vote. In a tightly contested governor's race, incumbent Democrat Bill O'Neill defeated Julie Belaga.

FLORIDA

Democratic Gov. Bob Graham defeated incumbent Republican Paula Hawkins, whose reliance on negative ads apparently hurt her at the polls. In the governor's race, Republican Steve Pajcic topped Democrat Bob Martinez.

GEORGIA

Wyche Fowler surprised incumbent Republican Mack Mattingly, in a close race. The governor's race matched incumbent Democrat Joe Frank Harris against Republican Guy E. Davis Jr.

HAWAII

Democrat Daniel Inouye won re-election easily. In a hot governor's race. Democrat John Waihee faced Republican Andy Anderson.

IDAHO

Incumbent Republican Senator Steven D. Symms survived a fierce challenge from Gov. John V. Evans. The governor's race between Democrat Cecil D. Andrus and David H. Leroy was too close to call.

ILLINOIS

Democrat Senator Alan Dixon was re-elected. In a governor's race that saw followers of Lyndon LaRouche earn a place on the Democratic ticket, incumbent Republican James Thompson beat off a challenge from Democrat-turned-Independent Adlai Stevenson III '52.

INDIANA

Incumbent Republican Dan Quayle, who swept to victory over Birch Bayh in 1980 on Reagan's coattails, won re-election easily over Jill Long.

IOWA

Republican incumbent Senator Charles Grassley won in an easy race. In a much tighter contest for governor, incumbent Terry Branstad edged Democrat Lovell Junkins.

KANSAS

Majority leader, soon-to-be Minority Leader Robert Dole coasted to victory over Democratic opponent Guy MacDonald. In the governor's race, Republican Mike Hayden defeated Democrat Thomas R. Docking.

KENTUCKY

Kentucky, the sight of the biggest upset in the '84 Senate election, offered no surprise this time around. Incumbent Democrat Wendell H. Ford easily defeated his Republican opponent Jackson M. Andrews.

LOUISIANA

In a race to succeed retiring Democrat Russell Long, Republican Henson Moore had been the favorite up until recent weeks. Riding a late surge, John Breaux managed to keep the seat for the Democrats.

MARYLAND

Representative Barbara Mikluski beat Republican Linda Chavez in a two-woman race to succeed retiring Republican Senator Charles "Mac" Mathias. In the governor's race, Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer won.

MISSOURI

In her second bid for the Senate, Democratic Lieutenant Governor Harriet Woods fell to Republican former governor Christopher "Kit" Bond, in a race that ran closer than was expected.

NEVADA

Democrat Harry Reid defeated Republican Jim Santini. In the governor's race, incumbent Democrat Richard Bryan defeated the Republican Patty Cafferata.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

Incumbent Republicans captured both statewide races. Senator Warren Rudman won earily over former Massachusetts Governor Endicott Peabody. Governor John Sununu, a defender of the Seabrook nuclear power plant, eked out a victory over Democrat Paul McEachern.

NEW YORK

First-term incumbent Republican Sen. Alfonse D'Amato topped challenger Mark Green, the surprise winner of the Democratic primary in September. In the governor's race, Democrat Mario Cuomo trounced Andrew O'Rourke.

NORTH CAROLINA

In a race that had been rated a toss-up, former governor and Duke University president Terry Sanford picked up a seat for the Democrats, defeating James Broyhill, who had been appointed to finish the term of Republican John East, who committed suicide earlier this year.

NORTH DAKOTA

State Tax Commisioner Kent Conrad ousted incumbent Mark Andrews in a race that both sides expected to be very close. Despite enormous support from the President and the national Republican party, the Democrat managed to capitalize on farm issues.

OHIO

Incumbent Democrats swept both races here. Senator John Glenn won easily and Governor Dick Celeste-who appeared to be in trouble at the begining of the year-beat back a challenge from four-time governor James Rhodes, who called out the National Guard at Kent State University.

OKLAHOMA

Incumbent Republican Don Nickles won re-election over Rep. James Jones. In the race to replace a retiring Democratic governor, forme Republican Gov. Harry Bellmon defeated Democrat David Walters, a Harvard B-School graduate.

OREGON

Republican incumbent Bob Packwood easily returned to his Senate seat. In the governor's race, former Cabinet officer Neil Goldschmidt beat Republican Norma Paulus.

PENNSYLVANIA

In a hot race, Democrat Robert Casey defeated William Scranton III to replace the retiring Republican governor. Incumbent Republican Arlen Specter cruised past Bob Edgar in the Senate race.

SOUTH CAROLINA

Democratic incumbent Sen. Ernest Hollings won re-election. In a tightly contested governor's race Republican Caroll Campbell defeated conservative Democrat Mike Daniel.

SOUTH DAKOTA

Democratic Rep. Tom Daschle, a farm populist, unseated incumbent James Abner. For governor, Republican favorite George Mickelson squeaked by ex-farmer Lars Herseth.

UTAH

Incumbent Republican Jake Garn, a veteran of a Space Shuttle flight, won easily over Democrat Craig Oliver.

VERMONT

Two-term incumbent Sen. Patrick Leahy won re-election. In a three-way gubernatorial race, incumbent Democrat Madeleine Kunin beat Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Price and Burlington's Socialist mayor, Bernie Sanders, but did not earn the majority needed to keep the race from the state legislature.

WASHINGTON

Former Secretary of the Transportation Brock Adams beat incumbent Republican Senator Slade Gorton, who lost support this summer after he traded his vote to support the nomination of Federal Judge Daniel Mannion.

WISCONSIN

Republican incumbent Bob Kasten held off a late challenge from the Democratic nominee, Ed Garvey. In the governor's race, Republican Tommy Thompson defeated Democrat Tony Earle.
