Crimson Place Second at Tourney Princeton Captures Six-Man Title

By Michael J. Lartigue

All good things must come to an end, but the 69 dual-match winning streak is not one of them.

The Harvard men's squash team finished second in the Men's Intercollegiate Squash and Racquet Association (MISRA) six-man championship this weekend end in Princeton, NJ, an event which does not employ the nine-man dual match format.

Princeton captured first place with 56 points, while the Crimson snagged second place with 49. The Tiger victory ended Harvard's seven-year stranglehold on the six-man title.

The six-man tournament is arranged into three individual single elimination tournaments. Team scores are counted from the number of matches that are won in each flight. Each individual win is worth two points toward the team score.

In the A division, Darius Pandole lost a five-game heartbreaker to Keen Butcher in the semifinals, while Harvard Co-Captain Russ Ball dropped a decision to the nation's number one ranked player, Jeff Stanley.

Harvard's Jim Masland took Jamie Crombie, the eventual B tournament winner, to five games before succumbing in the quarterfinals. Jack Colbourne lost to Princeton's Chris Stevens in a five-game semifinal.

In the C division, Harvard Co-Captain Jack Polsky dropped a tough decision to Eril Wohglemuth, while Doug Lifford fell in the round of 16.

The Crimson won the national nine-man and Ivy League title for the sixth straight year, both all-time records. Harvard now has won 28 rational championships and 29 Ivy League titles.
