In 1986-87 Icemen Were 15-0

By Mark Brazaitis

Once again, Yale spoiled the party.

The Harvard hockey team began the 1986-87 season with a school-record 15 straight victories. But the Elis ruined the fun with a 4-2 triumph at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn.

The road to New Haven was paved with pleasant and, on occasion, unexpected turns.

Harvard 5, Brown 2

In its first game since a 6-5 loss to Michigan State in the finals of the NCAA Tournament, the Crimson knocks off the Bruins at Bright Center. Five Harvard players score.

Harvard 4, Yale 1

Two power-play goals, from Tim Barakett and Lane MacDonald, help the Crimson scorch the Elis.

Harvard 6, Princeton 2

He was never known as a great scorer. In fact, he was never known as a scorer. But Captain Peter Chiarelli notches a hat trick to give the Crimson a victory in Princeton, N.J.

Harvard 6, Army 3

The Army leaves its bunkers and heads for cover. A potent Harvard attack, led by MacDonald (two goals), is too much.

Harvard 8, Dartmouth 3

Ever seen Green blood? Dartmouth is reeling after this massacre.

Harvard 5, Dartmouth 0

Goalie Dickie McEvoy is faultless between the pipes, picking up 22 saves.

Harvard 5, Colgate 2

Rookie C.J. Young puts the ghost of Tim Smith (his predecessor as first-line right wing) to rest by notching two goals and an assist.

Harvard 6, Cornell 3

Forward John Murphy breaks a 3-3 tie, and the Crimson silences the noisy throng at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y.

Harvard 3, Brown 2

Meehan Auditorium once again offers all the comforts of home--including plenty of room to sleep. Harvard lets an inferior Brown team stay close.

Harvard 4, Minnesota-Duluth 1

Who says West is best? MacDonald scores twice, Harvard soars.

Harvard 4, Minnesota-Duluth 2

The Bulldogs will think twice about inviting the Crimson back. MacDonald again scores twice. Harvard is a Beast of the East.

Harvard 5, RPI 2

After two periods, the score is 1-1. Not for long. Defenseman Don Sweeney breaks the deadlock.

Harvard 7, Vermont 1

No, the Catamounts don't leave their goalie on the ski trails up north. Barakett notches a hat trick, and Harvard rolls on.

Harvard 4, St. Lawrence 3

Saint Coach Joe Marsh calls the Crimson one of history's "premiere" teams.

Harvard 4, Clarkson 1

Goalie John Devin manages to see the puck in dark, cavernous Walker Arena. He makes 29 saves, and Harvard is still undefeated.
