Heading into this weekend's tournament at Brown, the women's water polo team felt confident that it could handle its competition. While the Metro-Boston club team has always posed a stiff challenge, the other schools Harvard faced--Princeton, M.I.T. and Brown--have rarely fielded strong teams.

Unfortunately, however, the Crimson could not maintain its intensity all weekend long, easily handling M.I.T. and Princeton, but falling to an experienced Metro-Boston team and an aggressive Brown squad.

While the tournament ended on a strong note, a merciless 14-4 shellacking of Princeton that resembled a scrimmage, the Crimson had its share of troubles earlier that day.

At 1 p.m., Harvard faced off against the Bruins, a team they had already beaten twice. But Brown silenced the Crimson's aggressive offense, led by Jen Gahan and Liz Brummond, and shelled the Crimson net en route to a 10-5 victory.

The Crimson opened up the day on an ambivalent note, defeating the younger M.I.T., 11-6, but failing to mount their potent attack.

On Friday Harvard struggled against Metro-Boston, a club team staffed by seasoned water polo veterans from the Boston area. After falling behind in the first half, the Crimson played close defense and strong offense for the rest of the game, dropping the contest 20-8.

This weekend the Crimson will host a rematch of the Brown tournament at Blodgett Pool.

"There are many things to work on--concentration most of all," Co-Captain Melanie Berger said.
