Armored Car Robbed Outside Cambridge Mall

By Jonathan A. Lewin

A man robbed a Wells Fargo armored car outside the Cambridgeside Galleria yesterday morning, according to the Cambridge Police.

The car's drivers were standing on the curb, unloading or loading the vehicle, when a man approached them and sprayed their faces with a chemical agent, according to Detective Frank Pasquarello of the Cambridge Police Department.

Pasquarello said the chemical used was probably Mace.

This kind of armed robbery is unusual in Cambridge," he said. "It's surprising. We hope it is just an isolated incident."

A number of boxes with unspecified contents were stolen from the armored car, he said. Police do not know how much the contents are worth.

The man escaped in a car.

A surveillance camera in the armored card may have recorded the incident, Pasquarello said. The FBI will assist the Cambridge Police in reviewing the camera's videotape.

The robber, who police say is a white male about 50 years old, faces a number of charges if he is found, including assault with dangerous weapon, armed robbery, and larceny

Officials at local Wells Fargo branches refused to comment on the robbery.
