To the editors:

As a soccer and field hockey coach of young women in high school and the mother of three daughters, I was particularly interested in the article "Shattering the Silence" (Opinion, March 6).

Rape isn't something my players or daughters talk about but it is something they need to know about. The author did a particularly good job in expressing the issues. I applaud her candor. I hope she will continue to speak out and I will share her article with the young women in my life. I hope they will not have to suffer the same pain. VIRGINIA M. GRANDISON   McLean, Va., March 6, 1998
