Botterill Leads Off Canada's Win Over Russia

Harvard junior co-captain Jennifer Botterill lit the lamp just 52 seconds into the Canadian National Team's meeting with Russia last night at Rochester. Team Canada never looked back on its way to a 5-1 victory.

To the surprise of no one, the United States, Canada, Finland and Sweden all clinched berths in the semifinals of the IIHF Women's Ice Hockey World Championships with their second wins of the tournament last night.

The U.S. overwhelmed China and Germany by identical 13-0 scores on the first two days of the tournament. Canada defeated Kazakhstan 11-0 on Monday.

Botterill is leading Canada in scoring with three goals and an assist through two days of the tournament. Harvard senior Tammy Shewchuk had a goal and an assist against Kazakhstan

Harvard junior Angela Ruggiero, a defenseman on Team U.S.A., is tied for the tournament lead with four assists.

U.S. will host Finland tomorrow and Canada will take on Sweden to determine the winners of their respective pools. The tournament finals are on Saturday and the gold medal game is on Sunday at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.

Canada and the United States have finished one-two respectively in each of the previous six World Championships.
