College Entrance Board Examinations

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

It has recently been decided by the Faculty that examinations given by the College Entrance Examinations Board might be substituted for the regular Harvard admission examinations in 1906 as follows:

For the Harvard elementary English examination (4 points), the following Board examinations in English--(a) reading and practice; (b) study and practice.

For the Harvard elementary Greek examination (4 points), the following Board examination in Greek--(a) ii Greek composition; (b) Xenophon's "Anabasis," books I-IV; (g) translation at sight of Greek prose. (These must be offered the same year.)

For the Harvard elementary Latin examination (4 points), the following Board examinations in Latin--(a) i grammar, ii elementary prose composition; (d) Virgil's "Aeneid," books I--VI, or (g) "Ovid," 2500 lines; (m) elementary sight translation of prose. (These must be offered the same year.)

For the Harvard elementary German examination (2 points), the following Board examination in German--(a) elementary.

For the Harvard elementary French examination (2 points), the following Board examination in French--(a) elementary.

For the Harvard elementary history examination (2 points), the following Board examinations in history--(a) ancient history, or (b) mediaeval and modern history, or (c) English history, or (d) American history and civil government.

For the Harvard elementary algebra examination (2 points), the following Board examination in mathematics--(a) i and ii elementary algebra complete.

For the Harvard plane geometry examination (2 points), the following Board examination in mathematics--(c) plane geometry.

For the Harvard geometry examination, including both plane and solid geometry (3 points), the following Board examination in mathematics--(cd) plane and solid geometry.

For the Harvard elementary physics examination (2 points), the Board examination in Physics. (If a candidate passes the Board examination in Physics, the subject will be temporarily counted in his favor in determining the question of his admission to College; but he will be required to take the Harvard laboratory examination in Cambridge in the autumn of the year in which he enters College. He will also be required to present, at the hour of the laboratory examination, a note-book in which he has recorded the steps and the results of his laboratory exercises; and this note-book must bear the endorsement of his teacher, certifying that the notes are a true record of the pupil's work.)

For the Harvard advanced Greek examination (2 points), the following board examination in Greek--(c) Iliad, books I--III; (h) sight translation of Homer. (Candidates are advised to present also (f) prose composition, since a fair success in it will offset deficiencies in the other parts of the examination in advanced Greek.)

For the Harvard advanced German examination (2 points), the following Board examination in German--(c) advanced.

For the Harvard advanced French examination (2 points), the following Board examination in French--(b) intermediate.

For the Harvard advanced history examination, (2) English history or (3) American history (2 points), (these are open to those candidates only who have offered Greek and Roman history as an elementary study), the following Board examinations in history--(c) English; (d) American. (In both these certified notebooks as prescribed in Harvard requirements must be submitted.)

For the Harvard advanced algebra examination (1 point), the following Board examination in mathematics--(b) advanced algebra.

For the Harvard logarithms and trigonometry examination (1 point), the following Board examination in mathematics--(e) trigonometry.

For the Harvard solid geometry examination (1 point), the following Board examination in mathematics--(d) solid geometry.

When two or more papers of the Board are substituted for one Harvard paper as in elementary Greek, no credit will be given unless the candidate submits to the Harvard examiners all of the papers constituting the substitute.

As previously stated this new decision will make it possible for a candidate for admission to Harvard College to pass the required number of points by taking only the College Entrance Examination Board examinations, with the exception that examinations in other subjects must be submitted for the Harvard examinations in advanced Latin and in chemistry, for which there is no equivalent in the Board examinations.

Preliminary certificates and certificates of admission will be issued in accordance with the rules governing the issue of the certificates which are given on the results of the regular Harvard examinations
