Eliot To Continue Merriman Tradition; Leverett Balanced, Leans Toward Music

Although "the Lord" will be leaving "the manor" this summer when Professor Roger B. Merriman gives up his mastership of Eliot House, indications are that his successor, classicist Professor John H. Finley will continue the traditions which "Frisky," established upon his arrival 11 years ago.

As a result of its reputation of being difficult to get in, Eliot annually attracts more men with extra-curricular activities than its rivals, while last year slightly less than 52% of the House members graduating received Honors.

House dances, dinners, and especially the traditional formal dinner on the occasion of President Eliot's birthday round out the social activities of the House along with many less formal gatherings.

Not noted for its athletic prowess in other fields, Eliot has for years been the possessor of the Agassiz Cup for the inter-House crew championship. Situated on the corner of Memorial Drive and Boylston Street, the House commands a beautiful view of the Charles on one side, but overlooks the less inviting subway yards on another.

Prospective concentrators in History, Government, Economics, or History and Literature will find the library and the tutorial staff among the best.

Near Soldiers Field

While the House is a good ten minutes' walk from the New Lecture Hall, it is but a step from the House Squash Courts, the Indoor Athletic Building, and the Weld Boathouse. With compulsory physical education at Soldiers Field. Eliot men will save several minutes over the other Houses.

"Pull" and if possible a couple of letters of recommendation go a long way in impressing the Senior Common Room, which decides on admissions, but it is not by any means necessary to have these or be a Groton graduate for entrance.

Down in the basement, Eliot boasts the Grill which sets it far ahead of its competitors in providing evening snacks for studious or restless members.

Numbering among its Tutors Associate Professor Michael Karpovich, History: Professor William L. Langer, History; Associate Professor F. O. Matthiessen, History and Literature; Arthur Darby Nock, History of Religion; Eliot is one of the best staffed of the Houses.
