Booters Beat Purple Squad In 3 to 2 Upset

By James M. Storey

After a three-game famine; the varsity soccer team jumped back into the win column with its second victory of the year--a brilliant 3 to 2 upset over strong Amherst--Saturday on the Business School Field. The Crimson attack finally came into its own with short accurate passing and numerous shots.

In the first and last periods Harvard dominated the game, while the Lord Jeffs played the more aggressive soccer in the middle quarters. In the first period the Crimson took eight shots to the Purple's five and kept the ball in the Amherst zone. For the first time against a major opponent Bruce Munro's men were passing to each other and not just up the field.

Mauricio Toro put the Crimson ahead at 20:05 of the first quarter. He followed the ball into the Amherst goalie, who scooped it up and then bobbled it. Toro knocked the ball down with his body and then shot it into the empty net. For the rest of half both teams threatened often, but neither could score.

In the second quarter the Lord Jeff aggressiveness hold the Crimson attack. Amherst beat Harvard to the ball more often than not, and the Purple took six shots to the Crimson's one, but none of them paid off. Though Ash Eames, the visitors' captain, was rough and skillful, the Purple attack played spirited, but uncoordinated ball.

Score Knotted

In the first two minutes of the second half, Bob O'Brien tied up the game when he sank a perfect cross from Manse Hall, Amherst inside. Although the Purple outhustled Harvard during most of the period (seven shots to two), the Crimson went ahead again just before the end of the third quarter when Alex Haegler booted a low, hard drive into the left corner of the cage from 25 yards out--the prettiest shot of the game.

Johnny Beer put the Crimson two goals in the lead at 3:30 of the final period when he converted a corner kick.

Munro then began to pull his starting team and use the reserves, and Amherst picked up their last goal at 9:58. Munro then put back his regulars, and though the final ten minutes of the game were rough and frenzied, the Purple was unable to put together a concerted attack, and the game ended, 3 to 2, for Harvard.
