Work Begins on Returfing Stadium Field

$55,000 Project To Take 3 Weeks

By Joseph M. Russin

Harvard Stadium is getting a lift and . Work began last week on the resurfacing of the football field, in over 30 years.

The project, which will cost approximately $55,000, became feasible when the Metropolitan District Commission announced plans for the South Charles Sewer project. The sewer line, to cut a 25 foot deep path, feet, through Webster Field the Stadium, will displace hundreds of square feet of good quality turf. Rather than sell or destroy the turf, and Grounds is transplanting the turf into the Stadium field, which really recovered from the game two years ago.

Turtleback Grading

In addition, the field will be regraded turtleback" pattern, which calls for a slight rise in the center, gradually away on all sides. The 18 inch parently doesn't bother the football team, but greatly aids in field maintenance. Rainwater which collects on tarp can run off to the sides instead of collecting in the middle.

Like nearly all major football fields, Harvard Stadium has been virtually flat for several years.

improvements in progress are the installment of a new drainage system with an automatic sprinkler system for the field and the track. Until now the track has had to be hand-watered every day during track season to keep it in good shape.

The drainage system will divert water from the track and prevent it from turning into mud every time it rains--which in Cambridge is distressingly often.

April 15 Target

If work is completed by April 15--the date--the Stadium will be ready for the Harvard-Yale track meet May 19. Other meets had to be scheduled away from Cambridge because of the construction. Buildings and Grounds explained that the work had to right now as the MDC is to start Webster Field. The MDC operation will take more than five months to complete.

Besides the actual digging, Webster used to detour traffic from North St. when the sewer cuts across the road. Only one of the intramural football fields on Webster will be available next fall.
