Terriers Unleashed As Harvard Plays Dead, 8-3

B.U. Rips Crimson With 4-Goal Blitz

By William E. Stedman jr.

They started playing taps at Walter Brown Rink with just 3:40 left to play, but Boston University had finished off the Harvard hockey team a long time before that.

A four goal outburst at the beginning of the second period sealed the Crimson's fate, as The Terriers skated off with a 8-3 victory before the largest crowd ever in B.U.'s modern arena. Seven different B.U. players scored, sharing a total of 43 shots on Harvard's frustrated Brian Petrovek.

B.U. got off to a quick start. With Jon Schuster in the penalty box for elbowing in only the second minute of the game, Peter Marzo shoveled the third B.U. rebound over a sprawled Petrovek to put the Terriers out in front at 2:23. Harvard came back, however, three minutes later, thanks to a pair of Terrier penalties to Jerry Gryp (3:18) and Rick Meagher (3:38).

Kevin O'Donoghue fired a slap shot from the blue line at 4:17 that beat Terrier goalie Pat Devlin cleanly, and gave Harvard a short-lived tie. Petrovek kept the Crimson in it with a couple of flashy saves on Mike Eruzione and later Terry Meagher, but B.U. was treated to one rebound too many, and at 15:25 Meagher (Terry) tucked the puck into the left corner on another power play for a 2-1 first period lead.

The Crimson squad came out to start the second showing some offense in the first minute, but the Terriers quickly ended any Harvard hopes of victory with four unaswered goals in the space of three minutes and 47 seconds.

All-American Rick Meagher started the outburst, tipping a Peter Brown slapper past Petrovek at 1:25. Mike Eruzione made it 4-1 just 40 seconds later assisted by Meagher (Rick). Ken Kuzyk followed with a goal at 4:08 and freshman defenseman Jack O'Callahan upped the count to 6-1 with the first of his pair at 5:12.

Dave Bell took a Crimson rebound 26 seconds later and the Terriers racked up a couple of penalties at 7:05 and 12:12, seemily giving Harvard a chance at the comeback. But the Harvard power play, which had problems all evening, could not get untracked to capitalize on the opportunities.

George Hughes scored the Crimson's third goal, but any hopes of continuing the rally were ended when Todd Nieland took an interference penalty at 16:55 and Bill Horton followed him into the box exactly two minutes later.

Power Play

The Terriers opened the third period on the power play for 55 seconds and kept the momentum until Fidler scored the seventh B.U. goal at 1:12. Petrovek seemingly had the puck frozen against the post with his stick, but there was no whistle, only the stick of Fidler slapping at the Harvard netminder forcing the puck into the net.

Again, the Terriers came up with successive penalties, to Kuzyk at 3:01 and Gryp at 5:45, but again the Harvard power play was ineffective. The Terriers finished off the scoring at 17:45, when O'Callahan scored his second, sweeping the puck in from the left side past Petrovek.
