Head of the Charles Overheards 2026
Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream during Head of the Charles weekend! From free Dunkin’ to Chase Bank totes (and don’t forget about the puppy play pen), HOTC perfectly embodies what our school spirit should be. Fun, loud, and well-attended with over 300,000 spectators (compared to our usual 50 #yikes). While we can’t tell you much about what unfolded on the river — or what the difference between “collegiate” and “championship” fours or eights is — we can let you in on what we overheard perched on the sidelines. This past weekend was just as much about eavesdropping as it was about spectating…
“I just stole 45 bottles of Vitamin Water.” — a proud kleptomaniac. Kinda puts my singular dragonfruit power-c to shame.
“Oh those guys are soooo hot. Time to pull up the rosters.” — an expert IG stalker. Hey, there’s no shame in the game. We’ve all been there. #worksmarternotharder.
“Last year’s free merch was better.” — Honestly, true. Why did I get a coupon for gas instead of a pretty tote bag??
“Why are they all borrowing Harvard’s oars?” — an astute observer, donning cool binoculars. Maybe I would’ve actually been able to tell which boat was Harvard’s if I had come that prepared.
“I talked to a girl! I love Harvard so much.” — a happy, formerly loveless tourist. Seems like the Harvard dating scene isn’t so hopeless after all.
“Ugh, I wanna be a coxswain now.” — It seems like someone might’ve rewatched Crew Girl one too many times. New bucket list item!
“Wtf that’s my ex.” — Oof. The universe works in funny and evil ways sometimes.
“Is that B for Brown?” “No, it’s for Bucknell” “What’s Bucknell?” — Oh! I guess you do learn something new every day.
“Do you think they’d let us borrow their boat after the race?” — an eternal optimist. No, sweetie. I think us regular, non-athletic folk have to stick to kayaks and canoes.
“Might as well walk to Trader Joe’s if we’re already down here.” — a multi-tasking genius. Don’t forget the fake takis while you’re there.
“Can I pet that dawg?” — Iykyk. Thank you to all the cute dogs on Weeks Bridge for making me smile.
“Why did I come here if I have 10 pages of my thesis due tomorrow?” — a senior full of doom and gloom. Hope that all-nighter goes well!
“Harvard is the UC Davis of the East...” — huh, not sure about that one.
Thank you to our amazing rowers and spectators for a wonderful weekend! Same time next year <3
