Letting Go of Mars: Madison Marsh’s Path in Service

Marsh’s life now — from winning Miss America in 2024, to serving in the United States Air Force, to enrolling as a graduate student at the Harvard Kennedy School — is far from what she ever imagined. And while grappling with ever changing dreams and passions hasn’t been easy, Marsh is certain that life will always “pan out the way that it’s supposed to.”

Editor's Note

Dear Reader, It’s been a busy week here at Harvard. But amid lawsuits, pending union strikes, and midterms, Harvard students are preparing to cast their worries aside for a day to observe the long-standing tradition of Housing Day. In the early morning hours of Harvard’s most important holiday, upperclassmen gather to procure posters, put on facepaint, and don house iconography. Adams residents pull on their acorn underwear, Leverett students attach fuzzy bunny ears, and my fellow Kirkland residents become one with the boar. Then, once appropriately decorated, we upperclassmen jaunt to the Yard. Packs of polar bears stalk south from Pfoho, troops of gorillas swing by from Mather, and schools of fish swim over from Cabot. And like the group of Kirkland resident boars — whom biologists aptly call a singular — that will soon be dorm-storming lucky freshmen, this week’s issue of Fifteen Minutes is truly one-of-a-kind. JBR interviews physics professor Christopher Stubbs, a researcher who helped discover dark energy, but one who seems truly bo(a)rn for fly fishing. Trust us, you won’t be boar-ed. Next, AS profiles former Miss America winner and current HKS student Madison Marsh Morris. (Unlike pigs, Marsh really can fly!) In case you’re interested in visiting some wild boars, AWA fills us in on Harvard Alumni Association’s little-known travel agency. Finally, to close out our issue, SOG shares a heartfelt reflection on her “October 7th story” — and what it means to share it. To multi, design, and the trio: We love collabo(a)rating with you. To our readers: thanks for letting me ham it up in this message. And to freshmen: I hope to soon welcome you to Kirkland House. (Or Cabot, Aurora has forced me to mention at tusk-point…) MagLove, KJK + AJBS

This is Not My ‘October 7th Story’

By Sarit O. Greenwood  •

Our grandparents know exactly where they were when John F. Kennedy was shot. Our parents know exactly where they were when the second of the Twin Towers fell. And so too, every Israeli knows exactly where they were on Oct. 7, 2023 — we all have our “October 7th story.”
