Alfred North Whitehead, professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, and for many years prominent in international philosophical circles, died last Tuesday morning in his suite at the Ambassador Hotel in Cambridge.
The 86-year-old scholar, whose works in symbolic logic and philosophy are authoritative in their field, died of a cereberal hemorrhage which followed a stroke on Christmas day. He served on the Faculty from 1924 until his retirement in 1936, and was one of the founders of the Society of Fellows.
Best Known for Writing
Professor Whitehead was perhaps best known for two early works, written before his arrival in Cambridge--"A Treatise on Universal Algebra," (1898), and "Principia Mathematics," (1910), in which he collaborated with is friend and former pupil Bertrand Russell. In the latter, a monumental three-volume opus, the authors cut one of the major tasks of philosophy in half by demonstrating that there is a definite connection between pure mathematics and logic.
Before coming to the University, Professor Whitehead taught mathematics at both Trinity College, Cambridge, and at the University of London, from 1835 to 1924. During the last three years of this period, he was Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology in the latter institution.
Born in England
He was born in Ramsgate, England, in 1881. He is survived by his wife, with whom he celebrated his 57th wedding anniversary last December 16; his son, Thomas North Whitehead, Director of the Graduate Management Training Program at Radcliffe and member of the Faculty of Business Administration; his daughter, Miss Jessie Mario Whitehead; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow in the Memorial Church.
