Terriers Run Away in GBC; Henry and Sheehan Cop Wins

By Becky Hartman

To absolutely no one's surprise, B.U. took the 23rd Greater Boston Indoor Track and Field Championship, amassing a total of 87 points to beat defending champion Northeastern by 11 and Harvard by 37 Saturday at the ITT.

The meet began with the Nick Saunders and Mark Henry Show, as Terrier Saunders took the triple jump with a leap of 49 ft. 5 1/2 in., and the Crimson's Henry won the long jump battle over N.U.'s Russ Hartman, thrusting himself through the air to 23 ft. 10 1/4 in. Saunders and Henry also finished one-two respectively in the 60-yd. dash, and Saunders took the high jump while Henry placed fourth in the triple jump.

Besides Henry's one-man show, Harvard found some unexpected depth to place in 13 out of 17 events. Freshman Cliff Sheehan came out of now here to take the 1000, crossing the finish line three one-hundredths of a second before B.U.'s Paul Fischer Sheehan had been in fifth place going into the last lap and was ten yards behind Fischer going into the stretch, but as he approached the stretch, Sheehan poured it on.

A Harvard duo of Dwayne Jones and Jim Herberich finished third and fourth in a record-breaking 440-yd. dash. Terrier Trevor Garrick set a new meet record of 47.93 as he led the peek from start to finish Herberich turned in a season-best time of 50.06, while Jones finished at a 49.65 clip.

In the 880, All-American Paul Nerves out-kicked Harvard's Brad Bunney. Bunney jumped out to a quick lead, and it soon became three-man race, with Bunney, Neves and Northeastern's Jim MacKinnon fighting for the lead. Neves came around the last turn in third but quickly blasted into first coming down the stretch.

In contrast, the two mile was decided at the very sound of the gun. Terrier Troy Billings broke away from the pack and at the halfway mark had established such a last pace that he would have finished second to the mile race. The Crimson's Bruce Weber also ran a fine race, turning in his best time of the season (9:00 25) to take second.

"I saw Billings take off and my instinct was to follow him," Weber said. "But I settled down and realized that it would be a race for second."

All in all, though, Harvard had to be proud of its performance, considering the number of injured runners who were unable to participate. "It was a moral victory," coach Bill McCurdy said later. "But I'm not a moral man, so I'm not that happy."

THE NOTEBOOK: Captain Dave Randall, who had been using poles of different size and shape, finally got the correct pole and vaulted to his best height this season (14 ft. 6 in.)... Coach Frank Haggerty was unable to attend because he hurt his ankle while leaving the Brown-Harvard hockey game. In the emulate-the-coach department. Haggerty's charges--the middle--distance runners--Serve Ezeji-Okoye, Scott Murrer and Bennet Mulin all injured themselves prior to the meet.
