MIT Death Ruled Suicide

By Garrett M. Graff, Crimson Staff Writer

The State Medical Examiner’s office ruled this week that the April death of an undergraduate at MIT was the result of self-inflicted injuries.

Julie M. Carpenter, 20, died after intentionally ingesting cyanide, according to a death certificate filed Monday in Cambridge.

Carpenter was found dead in her dorm room April 30 several hours after attending a birthday party in her dorm, Random Hall.

While at the time of the death police said that they did not find a suicide note, they indicated there were no indications of foul play.

Carpenter’s suicide is the sixth suicide at the school in the last three years. Last year, Elizabeth Shin killed herself in the same dorm by setting herself on fire.
