Under the Lights

Tonight's opener marks the fourth straight year that Harvard football begins its home season under the lights. The Crimson will take on Holy Cross at 7 p.m.

Harvard Stadium is well known for its likeness to the Roman Coliseum. But Harvard Stadium filled with thousands of cheering fans? And with two football teams battling it out under the stars and the bright lights?

It’s not only war. It’s something magical.

“It’s going to be something else when we step out there,” said sophomore running back Treavor Scales. “I have a feeling that when those lights come on, everybody [will know] it’s time to go.”

The Crimson is hoping to start off strong as Saturday night’s game marks the opening of its season. Selected by the national media in a preseason poll as the likely winners of the Ivy League, Harvard will first test itself against reigning Patriot League champion Holy Cross (1-1).

Published by Kate Leist on September 14, 2010 at 10:11PM

The Harvard football team has its starting quarterback, and his name is Andrew Hatch.

The senior and former LSU signal caller won the starting job in preseason after senior Collier Winters, a second-team All-Ivy pick last year and the incumbent starter, suffered an injury that will likely be season-ending in an intrasquad scrimmage.

That leaves Hatch in sole possession of the quarterback job. Though the senior has never started a game for Harvard, he did make three starts for the then-defending national champion LSU squad in 2008.

Harvard coach Tim Murphy named senior Collier Winters the starter at QB...for now.

In the modern era of sports, being a college coach carries with it the burden of constant media attention. Facing dozens of reporters at press conferences, head coaches have gotten more savvy—they say what they need to and leave the rest up for speculation. Here at The Back Page, we’re happy to decode some of these media sessions, showing the average fan what we think coaches’ answers “really” mean.

This week brings us the 2010 Ivy League football media day, where each Ancient Eight coach spent 10 minutes on Tuesday discussing the upcoming season. Here are some highlights from Harvard coach Tim Murphy’s session.

Ah, media day.
