Dinwiddie To Visit Cambridge

Published by Dennis J. Zheng on September 06, 2010 at 10:11PM

Another high-level men’s basketball prospect has Harvard in his sights. Spencer Dinwiddie, a senior at Taft High School (Woodland Hills, Calif.) appears to be very interested in the Crimson—and the feeling is certainly mutual.

The 6’4.5”, 175-lb. point guard told The Crimson yesterday that his final seven schools are Santa Clara, Harvard, Oregon, Colorado, Georgetown, UNLV, and Stanford. He currently holds offers from all of them except for Georgetown.

Dinwiddie is rated a four-star recruit by ESPN and No. 29 at his position in the nation by Scout. Named the MVP of the Adidas Super 64 tournament in late July, Dinwiddie is ranked as the No. 8 player in the state of California by Cali High Sports, which called him “the best passer on the West Coast.”

Weekend Preview: Saturday Night Soccer

Published by Max N. Brondfield on September 04, 2010 at 10:11PM

The first weekend of Crimson action is full of big games, but the marquee event takes place in just a matter of hours, when No. 10 men’s soccer (0-0) takes on No. 13 Stanford (0-1) at Soldier Field Soccer Stadium in a battle of NCAA tournament hopefuls. Even the UC has gotten on the bandwagon, promoting free T-shirts and other items at the big 7 pm game under the lights.

With Hurricane Earl politely skirting the Boston area, Crimson fans have no excuse to skip a contest that features intrigue up and down the pitch. Can sophomore Brian Rogers and a crew of young forwards carry the offensive load following the departure of standout Andre Akpan ’10? Will junior goaltender Austin Harms withstand the pressure of a diminished defense in the absence of MLS draftee Kwaku Nyamekye ’10?

The national media seems to think so, given Harvard’s solid ranking, but the Cardinal will provide quite a test.

Around the Water Cooler: Wherein We Strap on the Cleats Again

Crack those books

The Ivy League season is just beginning, and we've got plenty of water cooler talk ahead.

Never fear, Around the Water Cooler is back just in time for the start of class. If the thought of returning to problem sets and course packets doesn’t excite you, then maybe the return of Ivy League athletics will. It’s been three months since the Dartmouth baseball team bowed out of the NCAA tournament, marking the last time an Ancient Eight team competed in NCAA competition. The drought will end this weekend when teams from all eight members of the Ivy League suit up for the first time. With that in mind, let’s catch up on the latest news from around the conference.

The Princeton field hockey team, which kicks off its season this Sunday at home against Bucknell, is the highest ranked of any Ivy League team heading into the fall season. After reaching the NCAA semifinals last year, The Tigers received the No. 4 national ranking in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division One Preseason Poll released last week. The Crimson will play the role of underdog on Oct. 23 when Harvard visits Princeton. The Crimson would prefer to forget about its last contest against the Tigers, a 9-0 loss last October.

Top Hoops Recruit Hollins To Visit Harvard

Published by Dennis J. Zheng on September 02, 2010 at 10:11PM

Men’s basketball prospect Andre Hollins has confirmed that Harvard is one of his final five schools, as was predicted by The Crimson in late July.

After making a trip to Auburn this weekend, the White Station High School (Memphis, Tenn.) senior will travel to Cambridge for an official visit the weekend of Sept. 17-19 (the same weekend of the Crimson football team’s home opener against Holy Cross).

Next month the 6’2.5”, 195-pound guard will be visiting the campuses of his other three choices: Ole Miss, Minnesota, and Stanford. Hollins said all five schools are even at this point.
