On the first day of shopping week this fall, Nisreen S. Shiban ’17 received a phone call from Syria with devastating news: Shiban’s maternal uncle Makarem, a former veterinarian who had practically raised her, had been killed by ISIS fighters in Aleppo.
“No one ever thinks these things are going to go on. It’s always like, ‘Oh, in a few months it will be over... It’s ending soon. I can feel it,’” Karen Mardini '18 says. “It started out slow and then eventually started getting worse.”
