Classmates and advisers remembered Joanna Y. Li ’12 as a kind and discerning friend who often went out of her way to help out those around her with a well-timed gift, a meaningful conversation, or a ukulele serenade. Li, who had been on leave from the College since February 2012, died on May 7 in her Somerville apartment.

Joanna Li '12, a Kirkland House resident and neurobiology concentrator who had been on leave from the College since last spring semester, died Tuesday in Somerville, Kirkland House administrators announced in an email to the House community Wednesday night.

On Thursday morning, my plan was to write this article about Tyga. I wasn’t entirely sure where it would go; the initial impetus had something to do with timing, how the announcement dovetailed with public outcry over the verdict in the Steubenville rape trial. If I had an extra column, I might still have written that. But at 3:41 p.m., something much more pressing came up. On Thursday afternoon, Roger Ebert, a revered film critic and a personal idol, died at the age of 70.

Anthony Lewis ’48, Pulitzer Winner and Crimson Mentor, Dies at 85

Starting in 1946—when he helped relaunch The Crimson as a daily after World War II—through a long career as a Pulitzer Prize-winning legal correspondent and columnist for the New York Times, until his death Monday at the age of 85, J. Anthony Lewis ’48 helped steer modern liberal journalism through his pioneering coverage of the Supreme Court and coached some of The Crimson’s brightest stars.
