Philanthropist Richard A. Smith, Who Was ‘Deeply Devoted to Harvard,’ Dies at 95

To most at Harvard, Richard A. Smith ’46 is perhaps best known for what former University President Drew G. Faust called his “last gift” to the University: the donation that enabled the redesign and renovation of what is now the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Campus Center. But his generosity to Harvard extended well beyond just the edifice that sits as a primary hub for student gatherings.

Garber Announces Smith Center

In November 2013, University Provost Alan M. Garber ’76 announced the renaming of the Holyoke Center to the Richard A. & Susan F. Smith Campus Center and the renovation project into a new campus center expected to open by 2018.

HUPD Officer Involved In February Smith Center Arrest Criticized For Use of Force In Two Prior Incidents

Anthony T. Carvello, a Harvard University police officer who came under scrutiny last month for his use of force in an arrest at the Smith Campus Center, has also received criticism for his use of force in two other recent arrests of homeless black men at the Smith Center.

Jack Staid at the Staff Art Show

Jack Staid, who works at HUHS, was one of the participating artists at the Staff Art Show Wednesday at the Smith Campus Center. He has been playing the piano for 20 years and played three songs during the exhibition.

UC Meetings

The Harvard Undergraduate Council in the past has held their meetings in the Isaacson Room in the Smith Campus Center. Since the start of the semester, there have been no meetings.

The Advising Programs Office, which recently announced changes to the freshman advising system, is housed in the Smith Campus Center.
