Mather Residents Will Petition Rosovsky for Additional Tutors

Students in Mather House will present a petition next week to Dean Rosovsky requesting an increase in Mather's budget for resident tutors.

Steuart Thomsen'76, a member of the House Council, said yesterday that Mather has one of the highest student-tutor ratios in the College, according to information he obtained from the offices of the Harvard Houses.

"Mather's ratio is 22.5 students per resident tutor, as compared with about 15 and 16 for Eliot and Lowell," Thomsen said.

Whitlock Suggestion

Mather's CHUL representative, Travis P. Dungan'74, said yesterday that the petition was circulated at the recommendation of Dean Whitlock.

"Dean Whitlock said that the House system budget was in relatively good shape and that there was a good chance Dean Rosovsky would approve the request," Dungan said.

In addition, he said, Dean Whitlock assured members of CHUL that fewer students would be assigned to Mather next fall because of overcrowding there this year. This action creates more room for tutors, Dungan said.

General Overcrowding

"The real problem is one of general overcrowding," F Skiddy von Stade '37, master of Mather House, said yesterday.

"When seeking space for two resident tutors last spring, I was told I could have the space if I would place the displaced students as extras in other suites," he said. "Mather already had 15 extra students."

Von Stade said the availability of space for more resident tutors may depend on the completion of the new freshman dormitory in the Yard, which could house some sophomores.
