Racquetmen Run Away With National Title

The Harvard men's squash team won another national championship a sportsmanship award, placed three players on the All-America team, and five on the All-Ivy team. Not bad for a weekend's work.

The Crimson team ran away with the Men's Intercollegiate Squash Racquet Association (MISRA) six-man championship in Annspolis. Md. Over the weekend, winning two of the three division, and finishing second in the third class.

As expected, Princeton presented the strongest challenge to the Crimson, reversing several of last week's losses to Harvard, and winning Class C. Tiger Bill Ullman topped Harvard Co-Captain Spencer Brog in the semis, 3-1, and then beat Harvard's Peter Dinneen in the finals.

But the Class A and Class B titles went to the Crimson's Kenton Jernigan and Richard Jackson respectively.

Jernigan tore through the field, besting Williams' Greg Zaff in the final, 3-2. It was Jernigan's second national singles title this season: he won the USSRA championship last month. The sophomore has now won both amateur titles two years in a row, and has firmly established his grip as the top collegiate player in the country.

Jernigan's teammate, David Boyum, also participated in the Class A tournament, but couldn't quite meet the magic. Boyum, fighting an injured wrist and pulled muscle, lost to Princeton's Tom Shepherd in the round of 16. Boyum defeated Shepherd in the team's match last weekend, but was unable to repeat the feat in Annapolis.

In Class B both Co-Captain Jim Lubowitz and Richard Jackson reached the semifinals. There, Lubowitz lost to Williams Bill Nam, but Jackson went on to beat him in the championship, 3-0.

The Crimson won the overall team championship by winning the most total matches. In addition, the squad was also officially named the nine-man champs. In both categories. Harvard was followed by the Tigers, Williams, Trinity, and Navy , in that order.

Racquetmen Peter Dinneen, undefeated this season prior to his Class C final loss to Ullman, won the tourney's sportsmanship award.

The Crimson also ran away with the tournament's other accolades, with Jernigan, Jackson, and Boyum earning All-American honors. Lubowitz was named an honorable mention All-American.

The same four racquetmen, along with Brog, were also selected to the 1983-84 All-Ivy team.
