Fine Arts Class To Travel to India

Day trips to Boston museums are nothing new for Fine Arts concentrators, but this winter a few lucky students will take a field trip halfway around the globe.

The 10 students enrolled in Fine Arts 126y, "Art and Architecture of Mughal India," will travel to India in December and January to study the subject first-hand.

S. Cary Welch '50, senior lecturer and curator of Islamic and later Indian art in the University art museums, said the unprecedented trip would give students a "rare opportunity" to see the ancient art in the surroundings in which it was produced.

Students will visit the cities of New Delhi, Agra, Fatehpur-Sikri, Jaipur and Ajmer on the two week journey. The trip is scheduled to begin after Christmas and will extend into reading period.

An anonymous contributor to the Harvard Art Museums is financing most of the trip, Welch said. Students will also contribute a fee.

"This money was intended to encourage the ever-improving relationship between the department of Fine Arts and the Harvard Art Museums," Welch said.
