Tired Aquawomen Defeat Dartmouth

Big Green 190-105 Losers at Blodgett

By Jeffrey C. Milder

After a grueling victory in the three-day Harvard Invitational last weekend, the members of the Harvard women's swimming team probably wanted to be asleep in their beds rather than hitting the water against Dartmouth last night.

Fortunately, Dartmouth made it easy on them.

The Big Green hung tough in the early going--the score was just 48-45 after five events--but Harvard swept four of the next five races to open up a 125-59 lead and coast to a 190-105 victory last night at Blodgett Pool.

The win boosted Harvard's Ivy League record to 3-0.

"We expected to win," Harvard Coach Maura Costin Scalise said. "But I was very happy with some of the individual swimmers."

Dartmouth could only nod and agree.

"This is not one of the meets we key for as a team," Dartmouth Coach Becky Mitchell said, adding that she was more concerned with individual performances.

Won 11 of 16

Harvard won 11 of the 16 events, sweeping the top three places in the 200-yard butterfly, the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard freestyle, and the 200-yard backstroke.

Dartmouth took the first three places in the 200-yard individual medley, outpacing Harvard's first swimmer by six seconds.

In some events, the Dartmouth team was definitely outmatched. Harvard won the 200 butterfly uncontested, and competed against only one Dartmouth swimmer in the 200 backstroke and the 200 breaststroke.

Mitchell said that her team was also competing at a disadvantage. "We had finals last week," she said. "It's very hard to train during finals."

Mitchell considered the meet a success, because three new swimmers from her team qualified for the Eastern Championships.

Among her swimmers, Mitchell noted the strong performances of Deb Whitney, who won the 500-yard freestyle with a personal-record time of 5:10.47, and Andrea Hill, who won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.99. HARVARD, 190-105 at Blodgett Pool
