SAVING THE TOYS 'R' US KIDS

A summary of views, commentary and sometimes comedy.

By Olivia Ralston

The Christmas season is upon us (that is, sitting on our heads). While most of us college kids don't have time to think about the reason for the season--the true meaning of Christmas--we at Dartboard were recently forced to take up the burden of Christmas contemplation. Listening to the radio one day, having to (as always) endure endless ads, we were appalled by a Toys 'R' Us spot that caused us to hang our heads in disgust.

The spot to which we refer hailed what the toy megastore probably thinks is a visionary idea: Christmas-list registers for kids. So instead of having to ask little Johnny and Suzie what they want under the Christmas tree, all you have to do is trot over to the superstore and check the register. Perhaps this does make Christmas shopping for the kiddies a piece of fruitcake, but we think some-thing of the spirit of holiday gift-giving is lost in the process. After all, when we at Dartboard were wee tots eagerly awaiting Christmas morn, our biggest fear was bags of switches and ashes, not that we wouldn't get every last gift on our list.
